NDIS SOCIAL WORK THERAPY IS NOT MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS

There is growing confusion around Social Work and Psychological therapies for NDIS Participants and we're finding that families/carers and participants are being told that Social Work and Psychology falls under Mental Health Care.

Disability Social Workers (and Psychologists) focus on individualised Skill Development and Building Capacity related to the disability, which is very different to how Mental Health Social Workers and Psychologists provide support.

Unlike the Mental Health Care System of "therapy sessions" with the person only, Disability Social Workers use "hours of support" which provides for direct therapy with the person to introduce, assess and develop skills; and with people around them to support implementation of skills across everyday environments.  Time is also spent on non face to face activities such as individualising resources or developing programs of support as a way of formalising implementation strategies and monitoring progress.

Note that NDIS may fund Social Work (or Psychology) sessions if they are non-clinical in nature, aim to improve functional abilities, improve social skills to connect with people in a positive way and connect with community, improve motivation and organisation skills and become more independent with daily activities and independence.

OUR APPROACH

NEUROAFFIRMING COMMITMENT

To learn from neurodivergent people; and provide support that embraces a sense of authentic self for wellness.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

We are committed to learning and embracing a neurodiversity affirming approach within our therapy practice with the overarching principle that we do not change the person, rather we make accommodations so everyone can participate comfortably.

Led by personal experience and contemporary practice, we want to create an enabling environment by supporting strengths and advocating for environmental adaptions to suit all.

We will:

  • Treat you with the same dignity, curiosity, and presumption of competence that all people should be treated with.

  • Reframe "behaviours of concern" to unmet needs.

  • Discuss neurodivergence openly.

  • Supporting and recognising your strengths.

  • Supporting and exploring the joys of neurodivergence.

  • Honour ALL forms of communication (including non mouth words) as valid.

  • Continue to learn and evolve our neurodiversity affirming practice.

We will not:

  • Force eye contact.

  • Force or implement neurotypical social skills.

  • Force ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) principles of practice.
